What is a Mini Session?
A mini session is a shorter version of a standard photography session, typically lasting 10-20 minutes at a location and date chosen by the photographer. These sessions offer a limited number of photos, usually between 3 and 15 images. Some photographers may provide the option to purchase additional images beyond what’s included in the package. Mini sessions are designed for quick, efficient photoshoots, making them a convenient and budget-friendly choice for clients who want a few high-quality images without a full session.
The Advantages of a Mini Session
Mini sessions are ideal if you’re short on time or prefer a pre-planned photoshoot. They’re perfect for families who have already done a full session earlier in the year but want fresh photos for something like holiday cards. They also offer a budget-friendly option for getting professional family pictures when a full-length session isn’t feasible. Mini sessions provide convenience while still delivering quality images.
The Disadvantages of A Mini Session
One downside of mini sessions is that the short timeframe doesn’t always give children enough time to relax, making it harder to capture their true personalities. These sessions also lack the storytelling quality of longer shoots, which can better highlight family dynamics. Additionally, mini sessions usually don’t allow for individual portraits of each family member, and the rushed nature can feel stressful, especially when trying to get kids—and sometimes spouses—to feel comfortable in front of the camera.
My Thoughts…
I like offering mini sessions during the spring and fall. They’re perfect if you only need a few photos (think holiday cards), especially if you’ve already had a longer session earlier in the year. Mini sessions also work well for those who aren’t fond of being in front of the camera but still want some updated family photos. It’s a quicker, less stressful alternative to a full session while still capturing those special moments.
If you’re looking for a more relaxed, natural session that tells your family’s story, I recommend opting for a full family session. With more time, there’s space for movement and genuine connection, allowing your family to be themselves without feeling rushed. This creates moments of laughter, play, and love, all captured naturally. A longer session lets everyone, especially kids, unwind and enjoy the experience, so the photos reflect who your family truly is.
